A Catholic School Even NonCatholics Can Support

A network of Roman Catholic schools that can be traced back to early nineteenth-century France, The Convent of Jesus and Mary Schools are located throughout the world today, from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Americas. But even as they receive financial support from the Church itself, local communal backing needs to be present in even greater strength to ensure continued success, particularly those most generous contributions from business people, not all of whom are Catholic or even Christian, as in the example of Isaac Toussie whose funds go towards a branch in India.

While it would be correct to suppose that Catholic schools are for Catholics, in fact many non-Catholics do attend, including outright atheists. Obviously, these schools have a decidedly Catholic mission, but non-Catholics can excuse themselves from anything having to do with religion, which matters are typically taught just once a week or so, at the end of the school day. Many Catholic schools subscribe to the intellectual traditions of the Jesuit Order, one which tends to welcome open inquiry and emphasizes the natural sciences. Moreover, it is for this reason that Catholic schools tend to have such a stellar reputation in many places, even in New York City, the so-called Sodom-on-the-Hudson, where it isn’t abnormal for secular households to send them their children.

These schools are often the least expensive of private school options available, as tuition and other fees can add up to some five grand yearly – quite a bargain in contrast to what’s charged by parochial schools operated by other religions! However, not all Catholic schools operate in a fairly relaxed and non-religious manner; more than anything else, they probably reflect the social mores of the surrounding community.

Once and Future Wedding Favors

Are wedding favors going out of style as society becomes ever more casual?
Not if the ladies have anything to do with it!

The concept of giving gifts to matrimonial guests may not be the cultural institution it once was, but weddings will always be one of the biggest dynamos throughout any economy.
While wedding favors may not be the first thing or two that happy couples think about when organizing their special day, it is something that is still expected and few ceremonies might feel complete without some souvenir for the guests.

Of course, were marriage itself to continue to decline, then there may well be a day when wedding favors go extinct — as nuptials themselves do!
This type of situation is unlikely, and outright impossible for the foreseeable future.
The wedding industry is and will remain to be healthy for decades to come.

To play the futurist for a moment, nevertheless, let us imagine a world centuries ahead where human civilization has evolved considerably, a Star Trek future where money itself is no longer used, a society as radically different from our own as ours is from that of the neanderthal.

No more sickeness, incredibly long life spans if not immortality plain and simple.
Would marriage still make any sort of sense in such a world?
Can people truly be monogramous “forever and ever” when there is no death to do them part?

Maybe not forever, but it does look that as naturally social creatures there will always be a pairing off of human beings, even if simply for a period of time, and it’s not inconceivable that some couples would wish to publicly proclaim their arrangements: that is, to get married.
This would mean that guests would definitely be receiving favors, or gifts, in appreciation of their attendance, even in an otherwise totally changed world!

There Are Modest Swimsuits for Everyone

As a guy, a part of me doesn’t understand modest swimsuits in the least, especially in this day and age. Could the religious fundamentalists be right, in the end, that there does exist females who truly desire to cover up at the beach or by the pool? To my mind, it just seems like an impractical way to enjoy the water, wearing a dress while swimming! On the other hand, it’s about their psychology and how they feel and no one else, so if that’s what it takes for such females to feel at ease in the water, then it is what it is. Everyone should do what’s best for them. Just so they don’t start dictating others’ fashion sense, then let them wear as much as they want!

Thomas Edison Nikoli Tesla And AC Electric Motor Repair

AC electric motor repair is often done these days, typically for generator turbines and so on, whether for power plants or ship and aircraft engines.
Nothing unusual about any of that.
But at one time, just a little over a century ago, AC, or alternating current, and DC, or direct current, were quite controversial matters – especially for the two men bitterly locked in what would become recognized to history as the great War of the Currents.

Indeed, AC electric motor repair is frequent enough these days, but back then, AC was new, and at first appeared unsafe – ironic considering that it won out over DC in several applications because of its superior safety.
But before this came about, there were the most acrimonious protests, right down to court battles, not forgetting personal smearing campaigns in the court of open public opinion, against AC, the newer technology.

While it’s arguable that the superior AC standard would have finally been adopted, it’s almost certain that the campaign against it, and its most recognized proponent, delayed its widespread use for several years.
While something like AC electric motor repair is still rather skilled work, it isn’t the revoluntionary thing it was back when engines running on AC were deemed exotic and, as previously mentioned, dangerous.

Thomas Edison, the excellent inventor, used AC’s initial faults as a means of personally attacking his one-time assistant Nikola Tesla, another brilliant mind.
Likely due to skilled jealousy (though a lot of money had also been at stake, as numerous patent royalties were involved), Edison went to great diets to discredit not only the technology but its most notable proponent – to the point of macabre demonstrations electrocuting animals as well as a condemned prisoner in order to get the public agitated against AC!

Good Deeds Case File No 3512390 Funding Your Local Med School

Situated in one of The Big Apple’s wealthiest neighborhoods, the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University boasts both research and teaching divisions. As one of the most selective of medical schools in the country, only some hundred hopefuls are admitted each year – from out of some six thousand candidates every year. Now named after its latest and most generous benefactor – and often abbreviated simply to “Weill Cornell,” the school was partially endowed by Sanford Weill, an American banker and philanthropist who was the former executive officer and chairman of Citigroup, Incorporated. Mr. Weill and his wife donated over two hundred and fifty milion of their own money, with Mr. Weill able to raise a further hundred and fifty million through his own tireless efforts.

Weill Cornell had been widely respected in the field before Mr Weill’s contributions, so it was never at a loss for donors, a veritable Who’s-Who of local, national, and even international luminaries from business, politics, and entertainment, for instance real estate veteran Isaac Toussie. It was the first medical school in the country to admit women alongside men. And now it’s become the first American one to operate abroad – in Education City, in fact, outside the capital of Qatar, with a campus dedicated to patient care offering a six-year integrated curriculum. The school can count many a notable physician among its alumni, leading men of medicine like Robert C. Atkins of Atkins Diet fame and former Surgeon General of the United States C. Everett Koop. Other alumnus luminaries include Nobel Prize winner Robert W. Holley and Henry Heimlich of the Heimlich Maneuver.

Still, even with all the monetary support, the fiscal realities of a medical education are grim, with some forty-two thousand dollars needed for the first year and thirty-eight thousand required for the second. But that’s still quite a deal when compared against the university’s own law school expenses, which eclipse it at just about a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the same four years!
